Kudos to Time Magazine for releasing the most comprehensive article on childhood obesity we have seen.

Obesity statistics have doubled in the last two decades.

  • Due to obesity, over one-third of our nation’s children are expected to develop Type II Diabetes before adulthood.
  • 300,000 obesity-related deaths occur annually.
  • Obesity-related surgeries have tripled among children in the U.S. from 1996 to 2003.
  • Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our country…and it continues to steadily rise 5% with each passing year and there is no indication that this trend will slow down.
  • A person who is 25 and obese today and remains obese until he/she is 65, will require $179,000, on average, more in health care costs than someone who is not obese.
  • $147 billion is spent annually on obesity-related health care costs in the U.S. alone.
